Crypto-theology is the covert invocation or presumption of an absolute—such as certainty, exactitude, definiteness, omniscience, or universality—in contexts where such absolutes have neither been demonstrated nor are demonstrably attainable.
Often deployed unconsciously, crypto-theology undergirds claims to objectivity, inevitability, or authority in systems—scientific, political, or economic—that otherwise disavow metaphysical commitments.
